All about choosing a dog harness

For dogs who pull on the leash, it should be evident why the dog harness is a boon. If the dog's leash is attached to a dog collar, the collar will dig into your dog's throat, which will be uncomfortable and unhealthy for him. If the leash is clipped to the harness, however, all the straining information will be spread throughout your dog's body, not centred on his throat.

A harness can be used on virtually any dog instead of a dog collar.

The harness used as a valuable teaching tool is recommended by many dog trainers and animal behaviorists. A harness has many advantages over a collar in some very basic and humane ways.

A dog harness distributes force evenly throughout the dog. Instead of yanking the dog's head, you can pull on a harness and the dog feels his entire center of gravity being moved. This is a much more humane way of applying force to a dog, when force is needed. Also, when a dog feels his neck and head being pulled, he will either comply or become a "mule" and put all his effort into standing his ground. When a dog feels his center of gravity being pulled, he does not have much choice other than move along with it.

There are some dogs who "mule up" in a dog harness as well, but it is easier on the dog and the person to "drag" a dog by a harness than by a collar, which can literally choke a dog, and/or cause permanent damage.

If you put your pet in a dog harness, you will attach the leash to the harness, instead of the collar. Your dog must still wear his collar, because all his identifying info is on the collar. You simply won't clip the leash to that particular pet supply.

A basic dog harness goes around your dog's chest and front legs, and clips together at your pet's side. The clip for the leash is usually centred between your dog's shoulder blades. Dog harnesses really do make it simpler for you to control a pulling dog and dog in a harness can often be more comfortable on the leash.

Dog harnesses are usually made of nylon webbing but a leather dog harness is stronger, better looking and will last longer.
