Dog Adoption Checklist

Thinking about dog adoption from the humane society or your local rescue?  If so, here is what you need to keep in mind before taking this step:

  • dog adoptionWhy do you want to adopt a dog?  Are you trying to find a companion for your lonely pet, want to satisfy the desires of your children or are you lonely?  These are not good reasons to acquire an animal.  Only adopt if you truly want the dog and are looking for a pet that you are prepared to be responsible for, care for, train and love.
  • Do you have time to care for the dog?  If you work long hours a dog is not an ideal pet.  Dogs need exercise, walks, training and plenty of affection and attention.  They are pack animals and are happiest when with their families.
  • Do you have the space and the living arrangements to accommodate the animal?  Large dogs and high-energy breeds need backyards and room to run around.
  • Can you afford a pet?  The adoption fee may only be a few hundred dollars, but are you prepared to cover the cost of feeding the pooch, grooming him and providing him with health care?
